Ravenna is a city of art and culture, and particularly the city of mosaics; an ancient city that has been there for 1600 years and has three times been a capital: for the Western Roman Empire, for Theodoric King of the Goths, and for the Byzantine Empire in Europe.

The magnificence of this period has left Ravenna with a grand heritage of monuments with many-coloured mosaics, for which the city has UNESCO World Heritage status, “in that it displays the relations and the artistic and religious contacts of an important period in European History.” The city is also famous for its events, including the Ravenna Festival, recognised as an authoritative summer season of music and theatre distinguished for its programming of big names and for the cultural relevance of its themes. Ravenna is only a few kilometres from Comacchio to the south.
